What is the Pati Valley

Walk through the vastness of the mountains.

We cross high plains and streams, swim under waterfalls and see the vastness of the Chapada Diamantina up close, spending the nights in family homes of the Pati Valley’s descendants, who welcome us with great warmth.

Everything reaches the Pati Valley on foot or on the back of mules. We carry our personal items in our own pack (see the checklist), while the guide carries most of the picnic. All the comforts of the lodgings exist thanks to the mules — strong, tireless workers led by the patizeiros.

A walk through the Pati Valley is a turning point in the lives of those who come here: a sense of achievement, connection with nature, a new appreciation for your time and your companions. A remarkable experience that becomes part of your story.

A Mamut group in front of Morro do Castelo, in the Pati Valley

Our walk ranges from 800 to 1,300 metres of altitude, through riverside forest, remnants of Atlantic Forest, steep climbs and descents, the Gerais do Vieira (near the Capão Valley) and the Gerais do Rio Preto (near Guiné).

Two centuries ago the valley sheltered farmers and the coffee cycle, which supplied the surrounding mining camps, mainly across the high plains. Today, 14 houses of the valley’s native families have become small guesthouses that host visitors and cook our meals.

Along the way: the Rampa viewpoint, Morro do Castelo and the Lapinha cave, the Funis, Altina and Bananeiras waterfalls, and the 280-metre Cachoeirão viewpoint.

The experience

A walk to remember! Why is the Pati Valley unforgettable?

Along the walk we can take in the mountains around us: Morro Branco, Morro do Castelo, Morro Sobradinho, Morro Manoel Vítor and many more.

Because it is a long, tiring trail, the Pati doesn’t get as many tourists as the Chapada Diamantina’s easier attractions. Expect a more intimate experience without crowds, at least in the low season (see when to visit the Pati Valley). Once we enter the valley we are cut off from the outside world, far away from home — and that is the best part of travelling!

Which itinerary to choose?

All depart from Lençóis at 7 am, with transport and a guide. The difference is the time inside the valley: the more days, the more corners of the Pati and the less rush on each stretch.

Days in the valley

Walking, sleeping, eating and cooling off in the Pati.

What the days are like

Get ready for long walks, with steep climbs and descents, rocks to hop across in the streams and slippery stretches.

Everyone carries their own pack along the way (personal porters or mules can be hired if needed). Along the trail we take in the mountains and stop at viewpoints, waterfalls and streams to cool off while the guide prepares the picnic. Keep in mind that in a group we respect everyone’s pace, and in the lodgings we always make a point of getting along well together.

Sleeping in the valley

Nights are spent in family lodgings run by the Pati’s native residents. We may stay in the same house every night or move between them, depending on the route.

We usually stay in shared rooms, which are the standard, but private rooms for couples can be booked in advance. Shared rooms have bunk beds with a pillow, sheets and a bath towel.

How meals work

Breakfast and dinner are cooked at the lodging and are usually hearty (remember that others will eat after you). In the lodgings, meals are always shared as a group. The menu changes every day — enjoy it!

  • Day one: breakfast is not included — have it in Lençóis before departure, or we stop on the drive to eat.
  • Breakfast and dinner: cooked and served in the homes.
  • On the trail: a balanced picnic, put together by the guide.
  • Dietary restrictions: let us know when booking.

Extra drinks are not included.

Water in the Pati

Water is never far in the valley: the trail is crossed by rivers, streams and waterfalls.

Leave Lençóis with at least 1.5 L per person. Along the trail and at the lodgings, the guide shows you where to refill your bottle. When swimming in waterfalls and rivers, always follow the guide’s advice: water levels and currents change with the rain.
